UNDER FOOT RESEARCH AND MAKING

My research for "Underfoot," which began with conversations with Korean-Americans, led me immediately to the tradition in Korean culture of removing one's shoes upon entering a home. In further research, I learned that the architecture of the entryways in many Korean homes creates an area specifically for the action of removing shoes. I saw an opportunity for using entryway rugs to mimic this area, delineating the space between outside and inside the home, all while referencing a traditional Korean pattern.
